Dental cavities, which appear, for example, as a result of caries (trauma), should be replaced as soon as possible. Patients with cavities of various sizes come to our dental office. It often happens that, as an alternative to traditional fillings, we offer inlays and inlays and onlays, thanks to which the tooth is not only strengthened, but its reconstruction is anatomical, so it is more aesthetic. Inlays and onlays and inlays are made on the basis of the patient’s tooth impressions. What are the benefits of each of these restorations?
Advantages of inlay filling
The durability of the inlay filling is one of the most important advantages of this cosmetic restoration of the tooth crown. It is placed in such a way that it is adjacent to the natural tooth crown on at least two sides. It is used both on the surfaces of living and dead teeth. It differs from traditional methods of refilling, first of all, in the selection of materials and the method of execution. When making fillings using the inlay method, gold and porcelain alloys are used, among others.
It is also worth mentioning the technologies we use. In our clinic, we only use CAD / CAM technology in the CEREC system, which exceeds traditional methods, which involve the need to take a classic impression and the need to undergo at least two visits. It is also extremely important for patients that such a filling very well reflects the natural tooth. It is also worth knowing that inlays do not become discolored like composite fillings. In addition, they are abrasion-resistant, which also translates into their durability. The service life of such fillings is estimated at 10 years.
Advantages of onlay filling
An onlay filling, also known as an overlay, is an overlay placed on a damaged tooth crown, which recreates the chewing surface and nodules, which differs from the inlay method. It is used to fill larger dental cavities. The onlay filling will be perfect in the event of strong carious damage, because it allows you to fully rebuild the teeth and at the same time make the visual effect perfect. The inlay onlay and overlay filling is made on the basis of an optical impression of the tooth, i.e. its scan, and collecting information about its condition, color or shape, thanks to which it perfectly reflects its shape.
It is also worth mentioning that the optical impression is not associated with the unpleasant sensations that usually accompany classic impressions, and also gives the possibility of immediate correction of the preparation. The filling is made of high-quality porcelain, which is milled, thanks to which the prosthetic reconstruction is extremely accurate. However, it is worth remembering that after using such a filling, you should take care of oral hygiene so that it lasts as long as possible. As with the inlay filling, the onlay filling is abrasion-resistant, hard and natural. Thanks to the use of good quality materials, patients enjoy the effects of the supplement and a beautiful, healthy smile for many years.
